1. Opposing critical thinking

Basically nobody will concede that they do.

3. Emphasizing special doctrines outside scripture

Being cultic doesn’t have to do with doctrines being inside or outside “the scripture”, besides what is the scripture? Sola Scriptura? Catholics would qualify as a cult acc. to this criterion.

More on Tyler Deaton and his dead wife.

Love and Death In the House of Prayer

Tyler Deaton, a self-appointed apostle in one of the fastest-growing evangelical movements, loved Jesus, Harry Potter and, much to his dismay, other men. When his wife turned up dead, the secrets began to spill out

One or two signs doesn’t necessarily mean you are in a cult, all of them together probably would.

I get that.

I’m only saying that the 3rd point is not a sign at all, since it doesn’t make a difference whether the doctrines come from the Bible or from some non-biblical source (the Bible can be used to support any doctrine anyway, and the traditional Christianity - Catholicism and Orthodoxy - does not rely on Sola Scriptura, which is a late Protestant invention). Only the content of the doctrine might matter, not the source. This point is basically “getting rid of the rivals”.

The 1st point is problematic in practice, but I guess I can imagine a cult that explicitly says “turn off your brain and follow the leader”. Of course, I’ve seen this behavior in the so-called “non-cultic” religions too, so, as I said, it’s problematic.

Until the onset of the ‘bad’ cults in the 60s, the word didn’t carry an especially negative connotation with Catholics. it was normal, though a bit of insider-talk, for a Catholic theologian to use a phrase like ‘the cult of Mary’ in a positive way.
